Not a pun exactly (and most probably coincidence), but naku below momiji brings to my mind momiji niku = venison, some possible play too with naku shika (cry of the stag) kanashiki (sadness) ? There is a strong rythmic consonance of 'k' sounds - a possible pun on the locative particle ni (on, at, in) with ni [丹 or 土] as rusty/red coloured/red earth, soil creates an associative link - ni = at/red - red leaves momiji. It is left ambiguous as to who is walking on/through the red leaves - the poet, the deer (or with the possible pun on red - ni momiji red earth/red leaves , and autumn meat (momiji niku) being associaed with venision - a hunter?).
